EU and Kenya Strengthen Green Transition Cooperation with KSh 4.8 Billion Investment
Nairobi, Kenya – November 13, 2025
Kenya and the European Union (EU) today reaffirmed their shared commitment to tackling climate change and advancing sustainable development during a high-profile press event at the Alliance Française Garden in Nairobi. The event, part of the ongoing Green Diplomacy Weeks, showcased the signing of four new contracts worth KSh 4.8 billion, aimed at supporting Kenya’s green transition, conserving biodiversity, and creating sustainable livelihoods.
Four Flagship Projects Announced
The new contracts will fund projects across Kenya’s landscapes and communities, reflecting both national priorities and EU’s global climate leadership:
Support for Kenya’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) MRV System Investment: KSh 600 million This project will establish a robust legal and technical framework for Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of Kenya’s NDC commitments under the Paris Agreement. It will enable Kenya to track greenhouse gas reductions and report transparently under the Enhanced Transparency Framework.
Strengthening Climate Resilience in the Lake Baringo Watershed Investment: KSh 2.1 billion Implemented through a Team Europe approach with Italy and Germany, this project will promote sustainable land management practices to combat deforestation, land degradation, and climate change impacts in the Lake Baringo watershed.
Community Conservation and Tourism Development in Northern Kenya Investment: KSh 1.3 billion Managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this initiative will establish resilient community conservancies, enhance biodiversity protection, and foster regenerative green economies. It also seeks to strengthen peace and inclusive governance of natural resources in fragile landscapes.
Switching Kenya Green – Tujenge Pamoja: Advancing Circular Economy through MSMEs Investment: KSh 750 million Implemented by Hivos and partners, this project will promote sustainable businesses, improve access to finance, and create green jobs. It aims to accelerate Kenya’s circular economy by addressing resource limitations, technology gaps, and low public awareness of circularity benefits.
