Kisumu City is preparing to host a landmark event that could
reshape the future of cooperative development across western Kenya. The Lake
Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Cooperative Conference is scheduled to take place
from December 4th to 6th, 2025, bringing together leaders, policymakers, and
stakeholders from the bloc’s 14 member counties.
At a media briefing held yesterday in Nairobi, key figures
outlined the vision and strategic importance of the conference. Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME
Development, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, emphasized the role of cooperatives in
driving inclusive economic growth. “This conference is not just a meeting—it’s
a movement. Cooperatives are the engine of community transformation, and we
must harness their full potential,” he said.
Kisumu Governor Prof.
Anyang’ Nyong’o, whose county will host the event, expressed pride in
Kisumu’s leadership role within the bloc. “Kisumu is ready to welcome the
region and the world. We are committed to showcasing how cooperative models can
uplift lives and build sustainable economies,” he stated.
Also speaking at the briefing was former Senate Speaker and Bungoma Governor Ken
Lusaka, who highlighted the need for inter-county collaboration. “The
cooperative sector must evolve to meet the needs of our youth, women, and
farmers. This conference will help us align our policies and share best
practices,” Lusaka noted.
The CEO of the Lake
Region Economic Bloc, who is spearheading the conference’s organization,
stressed the importance of innovation and regional unity. “We are bringing
together minds and models that work. Our goal is to create a blueprint for
cooperative success that reflects the diversity and strength of our region,”
she said.
The conference will feature keynote addresses, policy
dialogues, exhibitions, and workshops focused on cooperative financing,
governance, digital transformation, and youth engagement. Delegates from across
Kenya and neighboring countries are expected to attend.
As the countdown begins, Kisumu is positioning itself not
just as a host city, but as a hub for cooperative excellence and regional
integration.
